Swine flu has arrived...

Presently there are 2 known cases in Alberta (one in the North and one in Calgary). No reported cases in Edmonton...although someone on a local forum has spilled the beans that there is someone in isolation in a local hospital, with a suspected case. Great.

Today, at the kid's school, there were signs all over the place stating not to enter if you had any flu like symptoms. I'm starting to freak, just a little bit...but then I'm a bit of a hypochondriac, I'll admit.

...and right now the kids are watching a cartoon on The Disney Channel called "The Replacements". One of the characters is visiting Canada, and the Canadian family ends every sentence with 'eh', they call pancakes 'flapjacks' and their bacon 'is all kinds of crazy' lol. Never mind their pet caribou. That stuff drives me nuts lol. Now the kid is running away because he can't get corn dogs in Canada.

He can come to my house, my freezer is full of corn dogs :D . But I don't have any of that crazy bacon they're talking about, we just have the regular kind :D .

lol, that is too funny! I have a sore throat and sneeze, but I am pretty sure it is from camping, and not from swine since I havnt been out of the house much....

There advice about washing hands is probably the best prevention. Make up a game about handwashing and the kids will benefit from it all their lives.

To put this insanity re: Swine Flu into perspective-
Every year in the United States, an average of five to 20 percent of the population gets the flu. Of those, about 200,000 people are hospitalized for flu complications and about 36,000 die from the flu and flu-related complications—primarily pneumonia. In fact, the combination of influenza and pneumonia is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. As of February 3, 2007, pneumonia and influenza was listed as an underlying or contributing cause of death for 7.4 percent of all deaths reported in the United States. The flu tends to hit children and the elderly hardest. An average of 92 children under the age of five die each year, while more than 90 percent of flu-related deaths occur in those 65 and older.

I know *sigh*...my common sense tells me to smarten up, that things will be fine. But it's time for a pandemic, you know...it's been more than 40 years since one...but I asked my mom yesterday what that was like in 1968 and she "doesn't remember so it couldn't have been that bad" lol.

I'm always on the kids about washing their hands, but I'm sure they don't wash once while they're at school. Kylie has sanitizer in her desk, but I'm not sure what I think about that stuff being used on a regular basis...

I'm a fence sitter - I know the world is due, so am watching the news carefully, but I also think it's a bit early to be freaking out. Me and my older two have a cold, but I'm not calling for a quarantine :)

My girls are really sick....with a flu. Vomiting, diarrhea....it is really scary when little kids get it. I'm not hunkering down in our basement yet...but it does make you wonder????? I'm managing to keep my wits about me, just wishing we were healthy! ARGH! It makes me feel like I'm about as powerful as an ant. meh.

I like Neonjake's advice... :) Have to make it a habit!
