Iced Cap Recipe

Last summer when I was pregnant, Scott made these for us every night :D .

I'm pretty sure I've posted this before, and I don't really remember where it comes from, so I can't credit anyone. I know, it's sort of pointless to add Splenda if you're using chocolate syrup, but it's still way less calories than a Timmie's Iced Cap...and if you really wanted to, you could just use a bit of cocoa powder and another spoon of splenda. Or you could just leave the chocolate part out altogether if you wanted to. Anyways, let's get to the point:

ICED CAP RECIPE

1 1/2 tbsp instant coffee crystals (regular or decaf)
1 tray ice cubes
1 cup skim milk
3 tbsp Splenda
1 1/2 tbsp chocolate syrup

Throw everything in the blender and mix until smooth. Makes 2 tall, cool and yummy drinks.

I'm melting...

Yuk, I hate hot!!! I love summer, but I hate the heat. The kids are even saying that it's too hot for the spray park LOL...honestly, I much prefer -32C to the +32 that it is going to be today.

So, what have we been doing? Hmm...

Friday night the big kids went to Auntie Sheri's so we took advantage of that opportunity to take Sammy to Gramma's while we went out on a date. We went to the Outback for supper, which was just ok, and then went for a walk around Beaumaris Lake. I love that lake, I wish we lived closer so I could walk there more often. There were so many families there, feeding the geese and riding their bikes, etc. It was a beautiful night. I commented that we have to bring the kids back to feed the geese, and how Kylie would love the goslings...Scott said, "If there are 8 goslings in a family are they called Gosselens???" Hardy, har har. I wonder if Jon and Kate have heard that before LOL...

After we picked up Sammy and put her to bed, Scott and I watched Scarface...I haven't seen it before so I requested it from the library. I'm not a movie buff...I can think of a hundred other things I would like to do besides sitting through an entire movie, but Scott likes them so I figured if it was boring I could at least do some hand sewing on my felt food creations or mend socks or something. The movie was tolerable...not as fantastic as others have made it out to be. We actually have yet to see the last half hour or so, because I was too tired to stay up. We'll try to watch it tonight when the kids are in bed.

Saturday, we picked up the big kids from Auntie's and then we headed to JA Fife (I think it's called???) spray park. The big kids think they are too cool for spray parks now...which sort of bums me out. I love spray parks. I guess I will have to wait for Sammy to get a bit bigger and then she can keep me company there LOL. We spread out a blanket in the shade and had snacks while Sammy played, and the big kids hit the playground. Great day.

Sunday...Scott is golfing with his dad today, part of his Father's Day gift from me and the kids. So I took the kids to McDonald's for breakfast, then we washed the van and headed to Sobey's for a few groceries, just because it was right there. My gosh...that place is expensive. But at least they willingly bag your groceries and offer to take it to your car for you...not too many places do that anymore.

I think this afternoon we will sit inside by the portable air conditioner and work on some crafts. We have some plastic stained glass projects we are working on, as well as Perler bead projects. I love Perler beads...they're so much fun. Oh, and of course, the felt food. On Friday, I bought 30 sheets of felt at Michael's LOL...and then they handed me a coupon for 20% off an entire purchase for Saturday...figures.

All I've got done so far in my felt collection is 2 cupcakes, because I had to tweak the pattern that I made:

This was supper because Scott worked late last night...I get lazy sometimes and let the kids have Kraft Dinner (although I love it, too). But I had a yummy taco salad instead.

I have a new addiction: felt play food . I love the everyday items the best, like sandwiches that come apart to reveal all of their components (like bologna and cheese), salad and pizza. Kylie thinks it's cool, too, so I think it's something that we will work on over the summer when we're bored. Maybe we'll put it away for Sammy when she's older. Felt is so easy to work with and I really like to hand sew in the evenings after the kids go to bed, so I think it will be a fun project.

Today is the last day of school! I'm so excited. The kids have already brought home all of their supplies and assignments, and have been sitting on the floor at school for the last few days...their desks have been dragged to the hallway. Kylie is not impressed with her teacher, and for that matter I'm not either: Kylie says all year he has promised things, like extra gym time if they behave, a year-end trip to Millenium Place, popcorn parties...none of which has materialized. As far as I'm concerned an adult should never, ever go back on their word to a child. Never, for no reason...unless you're laid up in the hospital or something so enormous has come up that you just can't do it...and even then, you apologize til the cows come home and promise to make it up and then follow through. So I've lost a little respect for the teacher that I thought was so fantastic at the beginning of the year. Kylie had a tough time thinking of what to write in her thank-you letter to him, so I said to just write, "Thanks for being my teacher! Have a great summer!" LOL.

Well, I should go clean something. The weekend is going to be 30C so I don't plan on doing any housework in that heat LOL. As if I do housework on the weekends anyway LOL.

Two more days of school!!! Yay!!! Jacob and Kylie have been working on cards for their teachers...we used scrapbooking paper and the kids wrote a nice letter on the blank side, telling the teacher what they've learned over the year. Then we folded the sheet into a card. The kids had to come up with their own letter, I only helped with the spelling.

So while the kids were writing and colouring, I found a brown wax crayon...and colored in the chips on my table...then I found a blue Sharpie marker and colored in the teeny bleach spots on my pants...both methods worked quite well, actually LOL.

Today I'm meeting Scott and Auntie Sheri for lunch at Timmy's, and not much else. The yard still needs to be done because it rained last night and so we stayed inside playing instead :) .

Tuesday.

I'm not very good at updating regularly...and it will get worse when the kids are off school for the summer. Just thought I would warn you now :D .

Yesterday was a Subway lunch at school. One of the moms thought it would be fun to do something for the kids, so we had all the kids fill out order forms and then PAC paid for it. How much you ask? Oh...only $1200 . For freakin' sandwiches. I hope they were darn good, because that is just not going to happen again. Yes, I'm still bitter. LOL.

I went through all of Sammy's baby clothes yesterday and filled two large black garbage bags for a teacher's aide at Kylie's school who is expecting a baby girl. I have no idea who else to give them to, and she is more than happy to take them off my hands. It is sort of sad, though, giving that up...but I just don't think I can physically handle another pregnancy. If I was 5 years younger, maybe. Oh well.

Sammy isn't feeling well today, her nose is constantly running and she's very sad :( . I put her down for her morning nap a bit early. We have some running around to do today: WalMart to pick up some pictures and Safeway for some fruit and milk. The van really needs a wash, too. Tonight, Scott will mow the lawn while I weedeat, that is, if Sammy lets me put her down for two seconds.

Later, taters.

Soccer season is over! Jacob had a lot of fun, but he was ready for it to be over. Too many fun things to do on the weekends besides soccer now that summer is here.

Photobucket
Kylie ran in the provincial finals this weekend (Hershey races). The best placers will go to Hershey, Pennsylvania to run there...I don't know how she did, but I don't think any of our school's kids made it to finals. Doesn't matter, Kylie had a great time running with her classmates.

Sammy, just looking cute while Jake played soccer.

Gramma went to Cirque du Soleil and brought back a clown nose for each of the big kids. You knew my family was a bunch of clowns anyway. That's my eye in the corner...you saw a picture of my foot a couple of weeks ago...maybe in a few weeks I'll post a pic of my hand...sooner or later you'll get an idea of what I look like. Bwah ha ha.

Thursday :( .

Yuk, just an overall cruddy day. Woke up during the night with a sore throat and it has just went downhill from there. I walked the kids to school as I normally do, and then instead of going for my normal nice, long walk I went straight home. Put Sammy in a paper diaper because I didn't feel like changing diapers as often as I would have to in cloth, put her down for her morning nap, and then put myself to bed. But I woke up with a fever...not good. I feel a bit better now, but still not 100%.

Everyone on Parent Council at school is asking why I didn't come to the dinner meeting that they had at a local steakhouse last week...and I simply tell them that I couldn't come because it was planned for 5:00...when the previous years it had been at 6 or later. Should I have come and brought all 3 kids with me??? This peeves me off a bit as I am always at the school when needed, always ready to lend a hand...but they couldn't be bothered to have the meeting a little bit later so that I could come, and they knew full well that Scott doesn't come home most days until near 6:00. It really, really makes me feel like just letting someone else take on the yearbook and cooking a jillion hot dogs. Yeah, good luck. 160 students and 3 parents show up to these things. Oh well, Scott says I should know better, that I'm just a mom and apparently I have nothing better to do in these people's minds. Sorry to rant, but I'm peeved LOL. There is a huge Subway lunch on Monday...and I've already decided that someone else can hand out all those sandwiches, sort out who ordered what juice, etc. I'm done. $900 it cost for this lunch. Sort of silly...for sandwiches???

Oh...and I just checked my email and the PAC secretary (position I held last year and gave up when Sammy was born) emailed me to let me know that Parent Council is buying muffins and coffee from Timmy's for all the teachers on the last day of school. Is that ok with me? I emailed back, "Sure, that's ok with me. What are they getting us?". ROFL...now to just sit back and wait for the puzzled emails to roll in...

*Sigh*. Honestly, during my first year of Parent Council duties, our President had sort of warned me that the shine would soon wear off and I would realize that it wasn't fair that only a few of us parents were doing all of the work...and that someday I would feel a bit jaded...it only took me 4 years LOL...

And to top it all off, I just saw the cutest little girl on a blog that I frequent...wearing the cutest little dress in the whole world...and I realized that Sammy doesn't have any dresses that fit her right now. Which just may send me right over the edge.

Thanks for listening. I'm gonna go eat something chocolaty now.

Our weekend!

We had a great weekend. Saturday was Kylie's 10th birthday party for her friends (her birthday's actually in July, but we have her party in June). It was by far the best ever and the easiest to prepare for and clean up afterwards. Our family and 6 of her friends went swimming at the ACT pool, and then had cupcakes, chips and pop at a picnic table in the park afterwards. It was so much fun...I'm loving that, as she gets older, the kids can just run around outside and play and I don't have to find activities and games to occupy them. And they pick up their own garbage LOL. But alas...we forgot the camera at home. Scott took a few pics with his phone and I'll post them when he remembers to upload them to the computer.

Sunday was Father's Day, and Scott got to sleep in. Around 9am, I went in and asked if he was ready for the kids so he pretended to sleep so that they could wake him up LOL. Then the kids piled into bed with him to give their gifts. Jacob made him a plasticine scene on a plate (like my Mother's Day plate), Kylie gave him a gift certificate for some motorcycle parts that he needs, and I gave him a gift certificate for golf. Sammy gave him a Wii game: Lego Indiana Jones and then she chewed on all the cards. Then we all headed to Timmy's for breakfast. Oh gawd, the 12 grain bagel with light strawberry cream cheese friggin' rules LOL!!! I love that thing. Never mind that it has a ridiculous amount of calories in it. I don't care LOL. Actually, I ask them to only put half of the portion of cream cheese on it. Still...so good.

The rest of the day was spent visiting with Scott's family, visiting the park and me going to work. After the kids went to bed, Scott played his video game all by himself...just the way he likes it sometimes. I worked on the yearbook, which is just about done. Just need a couple of more pictures.

Well, that's all. Today is Costco day, and I should probably do some laundry. Later!

Baby needs a new pair of shoes!

Photobucket
My neighbour gave me these after her daughter outgrew them...and I'm so, so sad that they don't fit Sammy anymore :( . I jammed her feet into them for as long as I could, but I just can't do it anymore. I don't care about the brand name and I don't care that they're leather...I just love the purple and the green together, and I love the butterfly on the toes. They're so pretty and girly, and the color is so different. Now they will go into Sammy's time capsule (a big Christmas popcorn can) along with her belly-button clip and the ID card from her basinette at the hospital. My baby's getting so big :( .

Photobucket
So to lift my spirits, we went shoe shopping yesterday. I found these cuties at Zeller's for $5. They're a tad bit big, but oh-co-cute! I love them. Sammy just wants to chew on them LOL.

Photobucket
But no pair of shoes is as cute as blu-polished baby toes. Yes, she can get her foot in her mouth. No, I'm not worried about her poisoning herself. Yes, I also did it to Kylie when she was a baby LOL.

Thursday.

What a loooonnnggg day. I am pooped.

A brief synopsis of the day:
  1. Walked the kids to school, then walked Sammy to my mom's.
  2. Walked back to the school to take pictures of kids that were somehow absent on school picture day, therefore they will have no picture in the yearbook. I photographed something like 35 kids today! One kid could somehow gauge whenever the shutter would snap, and change his cute smiling face into one of unimaginable terror. This happened 6 times in a row. So he gets a terrible, snarly faced picture in the yearbook instead of a cute smiley face. But he was very happy about that, so...LOL...
  3. Meet with Jake's speech therapist, who gives me a buttload of homework for him to do over the summer. And I mean buttload...my gosh, I'm not sure the poor kid will see the light of day until September.
  4. My mom met me at the school with Sammy, who decides she wants to nurse *right then and there*. So I find a nice cozy corner and have a seat while Gramma runs off to read French to the grade 4 class. Then Sammy and I are off to meet Scott for lunch.
  5. Have the most delicious, delectable 12 grain bagel with light strawberry cream cheese at Tim Horton's. *Drool*...oh my gosh, I haven't had one of those in ages...it was so darn good.
  6. Go to the mall to find Sammy some shoes and also some treat bags for Kylie's birthday party this weekend. Got shoes on sale at Zeller's for $5 (yay) and found said treatbags. Finally get on my way home again.
  7. Walk to the school to meet Kylie, and we walk to the library. Jake has his after-school group on Thursdays. The library is 1.3km from our home and is quite the walk; we do it most Thursdays now that it is nice out. I am sore though, let me tell you. But it's fun to just walk with Kylie and talk about her day.
  8. Walk back to the school to pick up Jake from his group, run home and make supper. Spend the evening putting together treat bags, washing dishes, washing babies and working on the yearbook. Yell at the freakin' neighbour kid for constantly throwing herself against the trampoline enclosure...after she has been told numerous times to quit doing it already. Argh...
  9. Stress over the fact that only 3 out of 8 kids invited to Kylie's party have RSVP'd when the invites specifically said to call by Wednesday night. Oh my gosh, how hard can it be to pick up a phone??? Kylie has asked them at school and all but 1 says they are coming, but really. Wouldn't it be a good idea to at least talk on the phone with the host of the party to ensure that I'm not a raving lunatic? My gosh, parents are so trusting nowadays. I'm sure that all the parents will drop off the kids at the door to the pool and then drive off in a cloud of dust, not even sticking their heads in the door to make sure that their kids are in the care of a responsible adult.
  10. Watch 5 minutes of 'Fear Itself' on TV. It is a horror series made in Edmonton, and tonight was the season premiere (I thought it was an ABC show, but it aired on E!). It sucked...well, what we saw of it anyway. It had Eric Roberts playing the obligatory bad-guy cop. All I could think was, 'oh, what cafe are they sitting at?' and 'those effects look really crappy' LOL. And that's 5 minutes of my life I'll never get back.
  11. Oh, and Scott's car broke down today so that means he will take my van to work tomorrow as he has some appointments :( . I had no plans but I hate being without a vehicle...I feel so isolated without it. I know, that's dumb. It's not like I live in the middle of nowhere LOL.

Later tater!

Tuesday.

I'm getting a bit behind, I suppose. I have a lot on the go right now, though. Kylie's birthday party is this weekend...her actual birthday isn't until July, but we always have her party with her school friends in June, because the one time we had the party in July not too many kids showed up. That's ok...they're off on vacation, living at their Dad's for the summer, etc. June works just fine.

So to prepare for her party, I've been giving chocolate bar new Naruto wrappers, shopping for treat bag stuffers, and party food. I'm not going all out for this party, though. We're taking the kids swimming and I'm crossing my fingers and toes that the weather is nice so that we can just have cupcakes and chips in the park behind the pool. There is definitely something to be said about having parties away from home...way less to clean up, that's for sure. Kylie is inviting boys this year for the first time...and some of those boys run around like their bums are on fire LOL. At least at the park they can run off some of that energy :D .

And my gosh, it was really hard to find fortune cookies for the treat bags. I looked everywhere...and then all of a sudden, they were all over the place! Auntie Sheri was nice enough to pick up a box for us when she found them. We had tossed around the idea of making some fortune cookies with custom fortunes in them, but I just don't have the time or the energy. Store-bought cookies will have to do.

The yearbook is coming along nicely. Today I scanned about 15 different art projects and rounded up a few class pictures. Sometime this week I have to go to the school to take pics of all the kids that were absent on school picture day. So now just waiting for the principal to write up a little inspirational letter to include in there somewhere...then we're good to go to the printers :D .

Supper tonight was Buffet Night...I ripped off that idea from someone else's blog. I don't remember whose (sorry). It's where you take all the leftovers from the fridge, and all the onesies and twosies from the freezer (like I had one salmon fillet kicking around...a few shrimp fingers...3 chicken thighs...a couple of cups of garlic mashed potatoes to make potato puff pancakes with...a few baby-cut carrots...2 cobs of corn). Then you heat/cook it all up and place it on the counter for everyone to serve themselves. The kids love it, and I get to clean out my fridge and freezer. Good times all around.

Well, I'm off to bed a bit early tonight. It's been raining off and on all day, we've even had a tornado watch, and I think the weather is starting to settle into my joints a bit. I'm just sore and achy all over.

Have a great night, everyone!

Read this quick before I delete it.

Why is it that they call that store in West Edmonton Mall "Build-a-Bear" when you can't actually build the bear? It's not like you can put on 3 heads and lop off an arm if you want to. I find that very misleading.

A friend and I were talking, and she dared me to post the tale of Kylie's mock Build-a-Bear birthday party that we held a couple of years back. In fact, she double-dared me...so here it is :D . I may take this whole post down tomorrow when I realize the extent of letting you know how cheap I am, but I have the nerve right now to tell you what happened.

For Kylie's 8th birthday, we planned a Bear Adoption party. For about 3 months prior to her birthday, I shopped Goodwill and Value Village stores, looking for brand-new condition bears. My limit was $2 per bear, and the bear had to be in pristine condition (in actuality, 6 out of the 8 bears still had the original tags on them). I bought all different bears, but all the same size and quality. To prepare them for the party, I first put them through a very hot dryer...just in case. I then opened the back seam of the bear and took out the stuffing, leaving the arms, legs and head stuffed. I clothes-pinned a number to the ear of each bear and then put all the bears in a large sac (my old laundry bag). When the girls arrived at the party, I had them each pull a number from a hat. Then we pulled the bears from the bag one at a time to reveal who got which bear. The girls were ecstatic and hugged their limp, lifeless bears LOL.

The next step was to give each girl a small wooden heart, purchased in a baggie at Michael's with a coupon. Then the girls were to color their hearts, write a wish on it, decorate with stickers...whatever they wanted to do. After the heart was decorated, they placed it in the bear and then proceeded to stuff them with the stuffing that I had pulled out of the bears in the first place. I had a big bag of stuffing from another project...I just tore all the stuffing apart and mixed it up in my giant bread-mixing bowl. There was a flurry of giggles and stuffing flew all over the place LOL...then I sewed the bears back up.

That was the hard part...quickly sewing up 8 bears while Auntie Sheri helped the girls make necklaces for their bears and matching bracelets for themselves. Sheri had a giant gar of sparkly pony beads and cording from another project and donated them to Kylie's party :D . She's a great Auntie :D .

Then we took a picture of all the girls holding their completed bears! The party went great, and each girl took home the bear, along with an envelope that contained a funky pencil, a mini chocolate bar and an adoption certificate that they had to fill out at home. I couldn't have hoped for it to go better...and the project cost $20 for 8 girls including the bears and the wooden hearts.

Would some of those parents be insulted that their child brought home a bear that had been bought second-hand? Maybe. Do I care? No (lol). Kylie had an awesome time at her party and so did I. And I did it all on the cheap, which was my goal :D .

Getting behind.

OK, I don't know why but we've been so busy lately...nothing big, just 'stuff'.

I'll do this in point form because it's just a bunch of junk...

  • Last year, Scott and I compiled the school yearbook using Publisher and a cd of photos. Took freakin' forever, because Scott and I had to create a template and there were over 100 kids. It wasn't brought up at any of the meetings to do up a yearbook for this year...until just this last Thursday * insert eye roll here * . It was requested by a mom of a grade 6 student who is graduating and going off to junior high, and she really wants to see a yearbook this year. Oh. my. gosh. I said I would try, and that's all I can promise. Worst comes to worst, the grade 7 students will have to come back in the fall and pick it up if I have to take the summer to work on it. This year there was about 170 students, and I have a new baby...yeesh. I'll try.
  • Last night we watched Nanny McPhee for the umpteenth time. I love that movie, especially when all the children introduce themselves. Hee hee..."bosoms". Hee hee.
  • Grampa and Gramma watched Sammy while we took the big kids to see Kung Fu Panda. Relax, we had tickets purchased with our air miles. Came with popcorn coupons and everything. Great movie! I completely recommend it.
  • Scott has taken the kids swimming tonight, but there are no toys or anything for Sammy to play with at this particular pool...although the big kids love the waves. So Sammy and I are staying home tonight to do nothing.
  • Scott is working all day tomorrow so it's just me and the kids. Jacob has a bookstore gift card, so he wants to go pick up a Jack and Annie book. How on earth did I raise two readers???

Well, that's all. Have a great weekend, everyone :D .

The other day I went through some of the kids' baby clothes and found this hoodie of Jake's. He last wore it when he was about 3 months old...and I had to make a little slit in the neck to fit it over his big head LOL. It definitely doesn't fit now LOL.

Scott and Sammy playing fort under a scrap of fabric when Kylie and I were cutting out the blanket for her teacher.

Sammy sits in her chair while I take a shower, but one day I guess I put her too close to the toilet paper. I opened the shower curtain when my shower was done and this is what I saw. She was so happy with herself, though, I just had to take a picture.

Wednesday.

Today is grocery day, so Gramma, Sammy and I are headed off to Superstore. It's mostly for produce and milk...not a super huge trip.

I also have some sewing to do today, a couple of wet bags for the diaper pail. I have a huge pail now, and only have to wash diapers once a week, so it would be nice to have a bag that just goes in the wash...so I don't have to bleach the stupid pail every time I wash diapers. Why didn't I think of this when I was pregnant??? Oh well, that's just the way it goes, I suppose.

We got our property assessment in the mail, and our taxes will be going up more than 20% this year. Which is mildly funny, because a few weeks ago, the city said it might go up as much as 10% and everyone had their panties in a knot. Never in a million years did I think that the shack that I live in would be worth as much as the city is saying it is. Unreal. Not that I could ever sell it for that much...not in this area, anyway. I might have to go out to work just to pay the property taxes :( . I've been offered a job, by the way, in the new school year: lunch lady at my kids' school. It's just one or two days a week, for an hour or so a day.

Well, I'm off. Have a good day, everyone.

An open letter.

The following is an open letter to the crazy crack head, who I cannot name nor link to, who doesn't seem to know that he/she is a nutjob.

Dear crackhead;

Oh. my. God. Give it a rest already. It's not them, it's you.

Clearly.

Yours truly;
Kylie's Mom.

Monday.

Today, I went to see Sex in the City with my sister. Holy moly, it's been so long since I've been to a movie...a ticket cost $12.50!!! Unreal. The movie was good though, and answered a few questions. Sort of a few holes in the script, but...it was still good. Meanwhile, Sammy and Gramma went for a trip on the bus to buy cheese. Really, where else would they go?

Scott is working late tonight, and then he has beach volleyball. Actually, it's just played in a sand pit in a playground by the University LOL. Supper tonight is scrambled eggs with leftover ham and fried potatoes. Yum.

Scott says he has seen the picture of my big, ugly, pedicured foot by his head while he was sleeping and he didn't mind. What a good husband he is :D .

Lookit my foot.

Photobucket

This is a picture of my big foot beside Scott's head as he slept peacefully with Jacob on the sofa. I'm not sure that if he was awake, that he would like my big dirty foot right beside his head at the end of a long day LOL.

Kylie, Auntie Sheri and I all went for pedi's today. Honestly, it's not my thing to do girlie crap, but I do like pretty toes in the summer :) . I chose a coral colour and Kylie got a glossy ruby red. Sheri got a sort of coppery-red color. Then we had ice cream at Marble Slab and went home.

Sammy was so miserable when I got home...although she did smile at my boobs LOL. But after nursing, she just cried and cried! I checked her diaper and realized that she had a rash all over her trunk. She had been at Gramma's for a little bit in the afternoon, but Gramma didn't feed her anything weird. All Gramma did that was different was change Sammy's shirt, so maybe Sammy's skin didn't agree with whatever laundry soap that Gramma used. After a shot of Benadryl and a bath, she seemed ok.

In the evening, we watched Austin Powers and everyone but me fell asleep in the living room. Then I put my foot by Scott's head and took a picture :D .
